Dr. Lawrence Popkin has been practicing endodontics for over forty years. After attending SUNY at Buffalo with a major in Pharmacy, Dr. Popkin received his DDS from New York University College of Dentistry in 1974. During his summers while in dental school, Dr. Popkin began his association with the Long Island Jewish Department of Dentistry where he was able to assist and learn. He credits that experience with charting him on a trajectory that would direct his professional life. He then continued to develop his skills as a General Practice Resident at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, followed by another year as Chief Resident through 1976. As Chief Resident, Dr. Popkin developed an affinity for endodontics which he then pursued as he furthered his studies. Beginning in 1976, Dr. Popkin furthered his dental education in a two year course of study as an Endodontic Resident and post-graduate endodontic student at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. He completed this program in 1978.
Dr. Popkin’s association with the Long Island Jewish Department of Dentistry has continued seamlessly through his career. He joined the teaching staff when he became an associate in an endodontic practice in East Hills, NY in 1979. That affiliation which has become an integral part of Dr. Popkin’s professional identity has continued for forty-six years. In addition, Dr. Popkin has taught at North Shore University Hospital in the Department of Dental Medicine since 1982. As a teacher, he has been highly respected and acknowledged. He was recognized as Attending of the Year in 1984 and in 2004 by Long Island Jewish Department of Dental Medicine and North Shore University Department of Dental Medicine, respectively. He was also a consultant at St. Francis Hospital’s Department of Dental Medicine. His capacity to impact and inform newly accredited dentists has been a major component in his identity.
After a brief association with an endodontist in Rockland County, NY, Dr. Popkin joined an existing practice in East Hills before opening his own practice in Roslyn, NY and then ultimately moved his practice to Greenvale, NY where he has remained for more than thirty years. Dr. Popkin is well known and respected as an excellent diagnostician and practitioner, always treating his patients kindly and with expertise. His standards as a professional have been maintained at the highest level throughout his career. He is highly respected in the dental community and prides himself on the rapport he perpetuates with the many referring dentists whose patients he treats.
As a professional who values continuing education, Dr. Popkin has been a longtime member of the Nassau County Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Endodontics. He has religiously attended study club meetings where he continues to learn from colleagues and visiting speakers, and has developed and solidified relationships with fellow dentists over the decades.
Dr. Popkin resides in Greenvale with his wife, Leslie. They have two children, Dori and Matt, and their wonderful spouses, Seth and Alexis who have provided them with four terrific grandchildren, Zach, Samara, Gavin and Colbie, from whom they derive much joy. Dr. Popkin has enjoyed photography as a hobby, and adds to his collection of photographs during his travel experiences, and of course, he’s got quite a few images of his grandchildren as well. Dr. Popkin also spends time in the kitchen where he cooks up creative meals for friends and family.
